In the morning I sewed and also most of the afternoon (making a dress for Mummy). About 6 o'clock we had a bonfire in the drive for all the children in York Lodge, also a few rockets which were lovely.

At 7.30 Mummy and I went to Church and sat in the Choir Stalls as it was so crowded. I have never seen so many people in St. Mary's Beverley before. After Church we went round to the Browns flat and heard the King speak at 9 o'clock. Then we came back for supper.

After supper we went out and let off some more rockets. Every house was lit up and there was a searchlight shining down York Road which looked wonderful. We walked down into Beverley to see St. Mary's, which was floodlit and looked beautiful. In the Market Square there were crowds of people all dancing and singing.

This is exactly as written in my 1945 diary when I was just 17, at school, and had never seen such lights and people celebrating.
